Milk looks (and tastes) better in glass

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Add style to your cereal.

The American Shatto Milk Company have made the move to glass. Their milk is now available in cool, stylish glass bottles. But for reasons more than just looks.

They say:

“[We've] decided to provide our milk in glass bottles. The reasons for this decision are very simple. First, the glass bottle tends to keep milk colder, and colder milk is more desirable.

Second, glass bottles are environmentally friendly. Our glass bottles can be washed and reused as many times as they are returned. Thus, recycling and reusing our bottles lowers the amount of material dumped in area landfills on a daily basis.

Third, unlike paper cartons or plastic, glass imparts no foreign odor or flavor.

Fourth, glass bottles are most notable in history for containing farm fresh milk from the local family farm, and that is exactly what you are getting from us. Let there be no doubt – our product is different – it is handled with the utmost care and packaged in the best container available, glass.”

Hooray for Shatto. And for glass. And for milk. And for cows.

Americans ♥♥♥ glass

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Our cousins across the pond love glass, too! Following a recent survey, a whopping 87% of health conscious Americans trust glass bottles and jars to protect their foods and beverages from harmful chemicals often found in alternative packaging materials.

God bless America.

The study was commissioned by the region’s Glass Packaging Institute. Their president, Joseph Cattaneo, says:

“Glass is made from all-natural resources – sand, soda ash, limestone, and recycled glass – and with a 400-year history in the American marketplace, glass is the only packaging material ‘generally recognized as safe’ by the U.S. FDA for food and beverage contact.”

When you dive into the research, it’s interesting to see how public opinion is changing towards the health effects of packaging materials. More than 81% of respondents have seen, read or heard that certain materials leach or seep chemicals into their food and drink. The good news is that more than 69% already recognize that it’s safest to use glass in the microwave when warming baby’s milk, for example.

I Love Glass

More encouraging news is that glass recycling is on the rise: around 41% of those surveyed say their decision to buy food or beverages is influenced by the ability to recycle the packacing material it comes in.

A good start, for sure.
